LuLu Benefit Concert/Arts & Crafts Show 2017

All Amateurs invited to participate!

General public as well as Shriners!
__________________________________________________

If interested in participating, please contact Lance Wiseman at lancepiano@gmail.com or call 215-576-5307 (If not at home, please specify when would be the best time to reach you.) The exhibition will accommodate all interests!

Do you or anyone you know have anything you would like to display? It can be something you make, or even something you don’t make and would just like to display (ie flower arrangements, potted plants, photography, pottery, holiday decorations, drawings, paintings, decorative baking (i.e. gingerbread men, cookies which resemble things etc.) wood carvings, and collectables); OR something you collect (ie sports cards, Christmas decorations, nostalgic or military memorabilia, tobacco pipes, etc.). But please make sure you do not bring anything of significant value!

Mark you calendar – The annual LuLu Benefit Concert will feature an arts and crafts show this year side by side. And everyone is welcome to display their creations or collections, community members and Shriners alike!

Free entry fee – Although participants in the exhibition will be required to purchase a ticket to the concert for $10 which benefits our Temple, they will not be required to pay an additional fee to exhibit.

The concert begins at 2 pm on Saturday Oct 21, 2017.

Price of admission only $10.00 (includes light refreshments). Tickets may be purchased from office. Advance ticket purchase is recommended for this special concert.

Featured performers/artists:
Noble Lance Wiseman, our pianist and conductor, will be featured soloist along with outstanding invited guest soloists who have graciously volunteered to perform just for us in an an effort to help out our Temple.

Among the featured displays in the arts and crafts exhibition will be works by professional artists Huangxin Wang and our very own Lady Kathryn Dyer Czlapinski, wife of Noble Lawrence Czlapinski, president of Delaware County Shrine Club. Their biographical sketches appear below.

Artist Kathryn Dyer Czlapinski created hand painted articles for Catholic Priests at the request of the Provincial Superior of the Little Sisters of the Poor. The painted articles were sent to His Holiness the Pope from 1961 to 1994. His Holiness then gave the gifts to priests being sent to poor foreign missions.

Artist Huangxin Wang and students, master of Chinese Painting, or Guohua, is a unique and vital art form with a long history of transformation which can be traced back as far as 200 AD, which uses the same mediums and tools as today. Mr. Wang and his students recently exhibited their works at Freeman’s auction from February 7-23.

For those of you who are able to attend, you will discover a special well known surprise guest which you are sure to be thrilled with! We can not divulge ALL of our musical acts, as that would spoil the surprise, and it would not be as much fun. However, we can tell you that, as always, it will be a pops concert with a variety of music including light classics and pops and handmade creations etc.

This is all part of our ongoing effort to bring members of the community and Shriners together and to provide visibility for our great fraternity. Our concert will open with our traditional flag ceremony accompanied by marching music provided by our in house orchestra, Arts International Festival Pops Orchestra (composed of members of LuLu Shriners Concert Band and their relatives as well as members of the community). They are generously donating time from their busy schedules for rehearsals and performance.

Timeless Classics concert at Shaare Shamayim on Dec 17

Timeless Classics

Where: Shaare Shamayim (9768 Verree Rd, Philadelphia, PA 19115)

Date: December 17, 2016

Time: 7:30pm to 9:30pm

Purchase Ticketshttp://timelessclassics.bpt.me/

Description:

According to the traditional definition, classical music is the one “written in the European tradition during a period lasting approximately from 1750 to 1830, when forms such as the symphony, concerto, and sonata were standardized.”

We would like to argue that at the time when this music was written it was considered a popular among royalty and aristocracy. It became classical for all of us because it survived a test of time. It is still popular today. Directors are using it in the movies, marketers in commercials, phone manufacturers in ringtones. And we, music lovers, are still able to recognize them after the first couple of notes.

We believe that quite a few of contemporary “popular” melodies will become “classical” for our children and grandchildren.

“Multicultural Arts Exchange” presents
Concert pianist Lance Wiseman (USA), accomplished violinist Alexander Spivak (Israel) and classical soprano Tatyana Mykhaylova in the brand new program “Timeless classics: From Beethoven and Broadway to …Star Wars”.

Tip-of-the-Month: Up/down wrist rotation

Beginner and Intermediate:

The more often you use this technic as you play, the more it will give you strength in the difficult spots. It will also be easier to learn the notes. This is because, once your mind is free of the stress of mastering difficult spots (spots which feel uncomfortable for the hand), you will be able to focus on reading notes with a clearer mind.

I like to use the term “right/left wrist rotation” (my own term) to describe moving the wrist from right to left or vice versa while playing the piano. This technic is different from the standard wrist position that beginners are taught, but is not contradictory; it is, rather, a NEW technic which is to be ADDED to the standard wrist position which is learned upon beginning piano lessons. You must practice this technic away from the piano at first; do not use any music; simply practice the motion described below.

Simply practice flipping your hand up and down while pretending that you have your hand over a wave at its lowest position (in other words, you are capping a wave in “trough” position). Follow through with the subsequent motion of this wave by raising your hand with it as it rises to its peak, never taking your hand away from the wave. Your entire arm should remain still, and only your wrist should move up and down with the wave, bending at the wrist joint.

Once this feeling has become ingrained, you will be ready to incorporate this motion into your piano playing. While playing a piece, simply raise your wrist up before playing one or more notes, and then gradually lower your wrist AS YOU ARE PLAYING THIS GROUP OF NOTES. In other words, “take in” a group of notes as you are lowering your wrist instead of keeping your wrist straight. Urge yourself to use it as often as possible when ever you encounter spots which are suited to it. In short, strive to use this technic whenever you feel that it makes it easier for you to play certain passages. This motion may seem strange at first but will feel perfectly natural once you have become accustomed to it; as with all skills in piano playing, mastery may only be achieved through thorough repetition.

Students at the intermediate level who are feeling confidant so far might wish to consider one or two of the advanced suggestions.

Glance at the above article for beginners and intermediate level students in order to understand what I mean by the term up/down wrist motion. As with all aspects of piano playing, the development of any new skill is always aided by practicing other related skills.

The following technics will aid with up/down wrist rotation.

  1. Fingers close to keys and pretending to play down to the floor. Wrist position slightly lower than normal; within this basic frame work, constant alternation between raising and lowering the wrists.
  2. Pressing technic; should feel like playing a composition on someone’s back (with a “pressing” or “caressing touch).
  3. Striving for up and down motion of wrists where ever added strength is needed
  4. Left and right motion of wrists
  5. Snappy spring-like action – grasping clusters of notes in one motion of the wrist; wrist must snap up and down or back and forth as the situation requires. This gives strength and speed. Indeed there are times when one can not exaggerate this technic enough!
  6. Practicing rather hard at first; then softening up (after everything is beginning to be automatic within the motor memory)
  7. Practicing brushing into the keys as you press them down. Likewise, try brushing out of the keys as you release them. Although this may not help from the standpoint of sound quality (depending on what other technics are used), it WILL help from the standpoint of accurately striking the key (“dead center”) in certain complex situations. This procedure will actually prevent slipping off the keys, causing cracks and downright disasters at times.
  8. Practicing away from the piano (one can practice playing on a table etc). It is important to test your skills at the keyboard periodically during these procedures to ascertain your degree of improvement. The moment that your recall is instantaneous and effortless, you know you have succeeded.
